Phonodroid Info

Phonodroids are an open species of robot furry created by Smorbee! They look like this:

I have a much more in-depth guide planned getting into more specific info about their culture and such, but for now these are some general guidelines when creating a Phonodroid!
(Note: These guidelines are not hard rules, merely suggestions and a place to start when designing one. I do ask that you try to avoid encroaching into features unique to other robot furry species in designs (eg. Protogens, Synths, etc.) just to keep Phonodroids distinct as their own thing!)

  • Phonodroids are a 100% synthetic species and contain no organic matter in their construction. This is very evident in their design, with lots of visible seams or even visible mechanics and a generally more grounded obviously robotic appearance all around.

  • Phonodroids contain a record turntable somewhere around their torso. This record is used for speaking purposes as well as music. The “official” alternative is Laserdisc, though there’s no real limitation in format if it’s in the same spirit.

  • The Phonodroid head almost always has the screen on the top side at most taking up the top half of the head and showing at least the eyes but also sometimes the nose as well. The mouth is physical rather than displayed on a screen. Designing one with a full-face screen is fine, but if doing so I prefer the design stay unique from other full-face screen robot species. The screen is most often displayed using CRT technology, but other similarly low tech display options are great too.

The full guide will get more into the specifics of it, but self customization is a big part of Phonodroid culture! Aside from the guidelines above, theres little in terms of rules on body shape, materials used, or color scheme. Get creative!

Theres also a sub-species called Phonotrons that are 'taur'. More info is being worked on for them in the full guide but for now these images cover the basic comparisons:

Phonodroids are an open species, you’re free to make, commission, and sell your own designs. You may also use your own designs for commercial purposes. Credit as creator of the species, especially if you are using them for a commercial purpose, is much appreciated!

There is an official Phonodroid VRChat avatar I maintain funded by my Patreon. This model is important to me (it and variations of have been a passion project for well over a year now) and does have its own limitations on use, being only for non-commercial use on the VRChat platform or other specific purposes with my consent. Do not let the existence of this model discourage you from making your own Phonodroid 3D model from scratch to use for your own applications however! It’s simply there for people that want to make an avatar from an existing base and not intended to be the only 3D representation of Phonodroids.
